In April 2013, the FDA made a ruling that  FMT could no longer be performed unless it was in the setting of an FDA approved clinical trial. Since July 2013, the FDA exercises enforcement discretion for fecal transplant (FMT) to treat Clostridium difficile infection that is resistant to standard therapy because it has proven to be so effective.  This means while the FDA considers FMT to be an investigational new drug and an experimental therapy, it is effectively allowing the use of FMT for refractory C diff infections outside of clinical trials. Since C diff is an increasingly life-threatining condition, they made this allowance due to the capacity of FMT to resolve c diff infection.

If you have a C diff infection that has not resolved despite antibiotic treatments such as vancomycin, metronidazole (Flagyl) or fidaxomicin (Dificid), then you may be a candidate for FMT at this time.

If you are local or you are able to make it to our clinic here in Santa Barbara, you may come to see us in person and we can support you in either receiving FMT from our donor bank or screening your chosen donor, obtaining relevant medications and performing home FMT safely.

If you have questions about whether you are a candidate for treatment, please call our clinic at 805-618-1626 or email at [email protected]
